This past month, Dr. Schiffer and Dr. Weinberg attended another installment of Cosmetic Update, a prestigious, invitation-only conference that brings together the top injection specialists and cosmetic surgeons from across Canada for a stimulating series of discussions on far-ranging topics. The meeting included a demonstration of new injection techniques for dermal fillers using reconstitution and cannulas instead of needles, as well as talks on new skin-tightening technologies, patient education tools that use iPad applications, and the latest information on breast implants. This year's conference was at the new Trump International Hotel & Tower Toronto, which proved to be an ideal setting for lively discussion.

Updates in Cosmetic Medicine

As many of you know, the Liposonix® high-intensity-ultrasound fat-reduction system has been available here in Canada for quite some time. Initially approved for use on the abdomen, it now is officially approved for non-invasive fat reduction on hip rolls ("love handles") and thighs. In contrast to many of the other fat-burning technologies that have come available in Canada during the past couple of years, Liposonix results have been excellent, with a high level of patient satisfaction reported. Recently, Liposonix was made available in the United States, and the preliminary reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. You can view excellent new reports about Liposonix at:

How to get a Face 'Lift' Without Surgery

A common complaint among many men and women is about sagging around the chin and jawline with early signs of jowls. The definitive fix for this problem is, of course, a surgical facelift. Toronto patients may already be aware that this involves repositioning and tightening the muscular underpinnings of the face and excision of excess skin. The remaining skin is re-draped and pulled taut. However, these days, many people can postpone facelift surgery for several years through the clever use of injectables– and sometimes with the addition of skin-tightening technologies such as Thermage® and Exilis.

Many people already know that so-called "puppet lines" or "marionette lines" from mouth to chin can be softened with the use of dermal fillers such as Restylane® and JUVÉDERM. Toronto patients will be interested to know, however, that judicious use of filler injections higher up in the cheek, close to the hairline, can sometimes provide additional improvement to the appearance of the jawline and chin. When applied with a "roll and inject" technique in the lateral parts of the face, the filler can be used to pin or tack up sagging skin, providing support and augmenting the cheek area at the same time. Additional injections along the jawline itself, particularly in the pre-jowl sulcus, can further serve to smooth and straighten the contours of the jaw. Typically, this technique requires a minimum of 2 syringes of filler, and it may require 4 or more, depending on how much skin laxity is present. The effect lasts for many months, and if a touch-up is done at 8 to 10 months, the benefits may last as long as 2 years.

If you are interested in finding out more about injection techniques to improve the look of your lower face and jawline, call 905-273-3045 and book a consultation with Dr. Weinberg or Dr. Schiffer.
