Good Candidates for Surgery After Weight Loss

After losing a significant amount of weight — either through weight-loss surgery or lifestyle changes — many people are often disappointed with the excess, sagging skin that remains. It detracts from the results aesthetically, and in some cases, the loose skin that hangs across the waist can cause irritation and infections.

You may be a good candidate for plastic surgery after weight loss if you share these concerns. Your weight should be stable for at least 6 months before undergoing aesthetic surgery, and you should be cleared by your primary health care provider.

Surgery After Weight Loss Procedure

Dr. Weinberg creates your surgical plan after discussing your cosmetic goals with you during the consultation. In many cases, multiple procedures can be combined in a single operation, which consolidates your recovery time.

These are the most common procedures included in surgery after weight loss:

  • Tummy tuck: Also called abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat from the abdominal area and creates a smoother, flatter stomach.
  • Panniculectomy: A panniculectomy removes skin below the belly button. This procedure is often needed for patients experiencing skin irritations.
  • Upper arm lift: Excess skin hanging from the upper arms is a common concern for those who have lost significant weight.
  • Thigh lift: The excess skin hanging from the thighs can cause irritation. Thigh lift surgery is performed to remove that skin.
  • Breast lift: Women often lose much of their breast volume after losing significant weight, resulting in sagging breasts. A breast lift can raise the breasts to a higher position.
  • Face lift: Typically a separate operation from other body contouring, face and neck lift can address jowls and excess neck skin.

Liposuction is included in many of these procedures to help reduce residual pockets of fat and sculpt smooth, contoured results.

Some patients choose to combine treatments into a mommy makeover to reshape the abdomen and breasts following major weight loss.

Not all patients are good candidates for a surgical plan that combines multiple procedures. Staged procedures may be needed if the extent of your concerns would require too much time for a single operation, or if your overall physical health suggests it would be safer to spread out the procedures over several surgeries.

Cost of Surgery After Weight Loss in Mississauga & Toronto

The cost of plastic surgery after weight loss depends on several factors, including the extent of the surgery and whether your procedures are staged. Combining procedures is less expensive, but safety is the primary consideration. For price ranges for our most popular plastic surgery procedures, please visit our Procedure Pricing page.

We review the cost of your surgery in detail, as well as other detailed information about your procedure, during your consultation with Dr. Weinberg.

After Your Procedure

The timeframe of your recovery depends on the extent of the procedure. Dr. Weinberg provides detailed instructions for you to follow once you return home. Expect to take at least 2 to 4 weeks off from work and to gradually start more physically strenuous activities that you may not have been able to perform prior to surgery.

Dr. Weinberg makes incisions as inconspicuous as possible, but you will have some scars, which usually fade over time.
