Are You a Good Candidate for BOTOX & Other Wrinkle Treatments?

Women and men often seek medical help for lines and wrinkles that give away their age and make them look tired or grouchy. One cause of such lines is repetitive muscle contractions that occur in the course of normal daily facial movements. Eventually, this repetitive folding causes so-called “dynamic” lines in the overlying skin – especially as skin becomes thinner, less elastic and less supple with age. BOTOX improves skin appearance by preventing the contraction of facial muscles that lead to lines and wrinkles. “Dynamic lines” include:

  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • “Bunny” lines on either side of the nose
  • Smoker’s lines above the lips
  • Horizontal forehead lines

In addition to softening dynamic lines, BOTOX may give a more pleasant, less “grouchy” expression and can give a shinier, smoother quality to the skin. Typically, up to 5 injections of botulinum toxin A are required in any given area. It can take several days, sometimes up to 2 weeks, to see the full effect of treatment.1 The cosmetic benefit typically lasts 3 to 4 months.1

Alternatives to BOTOX

Prescription wrinkle injections like BOTOX are only one of a number of non-surgical modalities that can be used to give skin a younger, smoother appearance. Other options, discussed in detail elsewhere on this site, include the following:

In addition, surgery is an option – especially for severe skin laxity and deep, well-established wrinkles. Patients can find details about faceliftbrow lift and neck lift surgery on the applicable pages of the surgical section of this site. And for patients looking to reduce the submental fat that causes a double chin, BELKYRA™ injections can target fat cells without surgery.

Who Should Not Get Wrinkle Treatments Like BOTOX?

Neurotoxin is contraindicated in certain populations, including in those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. It should not be injected in inflamed or infected areas of skin. It should not be used in individuals who suffer from neuromuscular diseases.

In general, adverse reactions with botulinum toxin A, if they are going to occur, will happen within the first few days following injection (and while generally transient) may have a duration of several months, or in rare cases longer. Weakness of adjacent muscles to those that were injected has been reported. Muscle weakness remote to the site of injection and other serious adverse effects (e.g. “dysphagia,” i.e. difficulty swallowing, when injected into the neck region) have been very rarely reported in the cosmetic application.

What Are the Negative Effects of BOTOX?

While BOTOX can be used effectively as a wrinkle treatment, as evidenced by the many successfully treated patients who are happy with their results, it is important to recognize that it can have side effects. For this reason, it should only be administered by medical practitioners with extensive training and experience in its use.

As is expected for any injection procedure, localized pain, inflammation, altered sensation or numbness, tenderness, swelling, redness, localized infection, bleeding and/or bruising have been associated with the injection. Needle-related pain and/or anxiety have resulted in fainting spells. In clinical studies, headache occurred in 9.4% of those treated with BOTOX, and drooping eyelid occurred in 3.2%. In the drug monograph, comment is made that this may be injection-technique related. Other less common side effects included redness, bruising, eyelid swelling and double vision. As with all medications, allergic reaction is possible, and severe allergic reaction to any medication can be life threatening.

Since the drug has been available and in use, other rare side effects have been reported after neurotoxin injection, including abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, fever, rashes, sensory disturbance and cardiac events such as irregular heart rhythm and heart attack, as well as seizures and others. As is pointed out in the drug monograph, the causal relationship between these side effects and BOTOX is uncertain. For a more detailed list of all reported side effects, patients are encouraged to read the official drug monograph.
