Is it possible to prevent wrinkles? That’s a question many younger patients have been asking after hearing about people in their 20s getting prescription anti-wrinkle injections such as BOTOX Cosmetic®. In Toronto, preventative BOTOX has been increasingly popular, along with other nonsurgical “tweakments” that address the signs of aging before they become truly noticeable.

Preventative BOTOX

BOTOX and other neurotoxins we offer, including XEOMIN® and Nuceiva™, effectively delay the onset of wrinkles. These preventative injections work for the same reason the neurotoxins are used to minimize the appearance of existing lines and wrinkles.

BOTOX, XEOMIN, and Nuceiva are all prescription botulinum toxin injections that relax muscles by blocking signals from the nervous system. These treatments have excellent safety records and have been used cosmetically for decades to treat wrinkles such as crow’s feet, worry lines between the eyes (the “11s”), and horizontal forehead wrinkles.

Because these injections limit muscle contractions that occur whenever you squint, frown, smile, or change your facial expression, they can also prevent lines and wrinkles from developing.

Dermal Fillers

As preventative BOTOX has gained popularity, patients are also asking about the best age for dermal fillers. Fillers work differently than botulinum-based injections.

Injectable fillers such as Teosyal®, Restylane®, and JUVÉDERM®, for example, restore volume that’s lost as we get older. They’re used for nasolabial folds and under the eyes, and they last longer than neurotoxins. Fillers, however, can also augment naturally thin lips for younger patients. Combining fillers with prescription anti-wrinkle injections produce excellent results, as you can see in these before-and-after photos.

Looking Your Best Through the Years

Here’s a look at what treatments are most effective at different ages:

20s-30s: This is a time when you may want to explore the benefits of preventative BOTOX, along with fillers that can help patients who have inherited traits such as weak bone structure. Lip enhancement with fillers is also a popular treatment at this point.

30s-40s: By now, the skin is losing elasticity as it produces less and less collagen. Many patients decide to get neurotoxin injections to minimize the “expression lines” around the eyes and mouth. The most common type of fillers, formulated with hyaluronic acid, can address the early signs of aging and become part of your overall skincare regimen. Fillers last from 9 months to 2 years, depending on the specific product used.

40s and older: Even though some people choose to undergo cosmetic surgery to reverse the signs of aging in their 40s and 50s, many continue to rely on injectables as an alternative to plastic surgery. Other fillers, such as Sculptra® or JUVÉDERM VOLUMA, are designed to address more significant volume loss in the cheeks that many people experience when they reach their 40s or 50s.

Of course, the age at which you start getting injectable treatments is a highly personal choice and one that is best made after consulting with a plastic surgeon or a medical injector.
