How BELKYRA Works
BELKYRA’s active ingredient, deoxycholic acid, is a molecule that is synthetically identical to a chemical that occurs naturally in the body. The natural version is produced by the liver and stored by the gall bladder. When you eat, it’s released to help the body break down and absorb dietary fat.
When it’s injected into the fat beneath the chin, the deoxycholic acid in BELKYRA works to break down unwanted fat cells. Those cells can no longer function normally, so the body naturally disposes of them over time.
Neck Liposuction & Neck Lift
Neck liposuction, like BELKYRA, works to correct excess fat under the chin. This option gives Dr. Weinberg an opportunity to surgically sculpt the jawline and reduce stubborn pockets of fat.
It’s important to note that BELKYRA and neck liposuction are both designed to reduce unwanted fat. If you are unhappy with the way your neck looks because of sagging skin, a neck lift is likely a better choice. The procedure treats the area by tightening muscles, reducing excess fat, and draping the skin at a new, slimmer contour.
If you have loose neck skin that creates the appearance of a double chin or “turkey neck,” Ultherapy is a nonsurgical skin tightening treatment that uses ultrasound energy to add definition to the chin and jawline. Ultherapy delivers ultrasound energy to the skin’s deeper layers, stimulating the production of new collagen.
Your Double Chin Treatment Procedure
Patients at our practice are treated under the supervision of an experienced, Royal College-certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Weinberg creates a customized treatment plan after your consultation. The number of BELKYRA injections and treatment sessions needed to reach your cosmetic goals varies. Many patients attain desired results after 2 to 4 treatment sessions.
The procedure is performed at our office and begins with your injector carefully marking a detailed grid in the treatment area. This serves as a guide during the session and makes sure that injections are precise and avoid vital areas in the neck, such as blood vessels, nerves, and the thyroid gland. A topical anesthetic can be applied, if desired, to numb the treatment area and increase your comfort. Treatment involves little to no downtime. Most patients can return to work soon after their treatments. Some discomfort is normal, but it does not impede your daily activities.
In a neck liposuction procedure, Dr. Weinberg uses tumescent liposuction, which contains a local anesthetic to prepare the area for treatment. The procedure takes about 1 hour, during which Dr. Weinberg inserts the liposuction cannula through small incisions to break up the fat and remove it from the target area. Patients typically experience minimal downtime, returning to daily activities the next day but refraining from strenuous exercise for a minimum of 2 weeks.
Double Chin Treatment FAQs
Will I see immediate results?
With BELKYRA, results appear gradually, and it usually takes about 8 weeks to see the optimal results following a treatment session. This is because the body needs time to absorb the unwanted fat cells and process them.
With neck liposuction, there will be some initial bruising and swelling. The majority of it will fade within the first week, but some residual swelling may persist for a month or more.
How many BELKYRA treatments are needed?
That depends on your specific needs. Typically patients see the desired improvement after 2 to 4 treatments. Treatment sessions must be scheduled at least 1 month apart and are usually carried out 2 months apart.
How many injections are made during 1 BELKYRA treatment?
Much as with BOTOX® Cosmetic injections for headache, a typical patient has between 20 and 30 small injections, although the number may vary after the first session. Dr. Weinberg works with you to create a customized treatment plan following your consultation.
What are possible side effects of BELKYRA?
There can be some minor discomfort following the treatment, although patient experiences vary. Ice packs and over-the-counter pain relief medication may be helpful in reducing pain if necessary. Swelling and redness in the treatment area are also common side effects, lasting several days or even a little over a week. Numbness, mild bruising, and hardness at the injection sites are other side effects documented during clinical trials. There have been rare reports of more serious injection site reactions such as skin ulceration.
