Microneedling Procedure

Microneedling uses a handheld device that is covered in ultra-fine needles that penetrate the top layers of the skin, creating micro-channels that trigger the body’s natural healing process, resulting in smoother, tighter skin as you recover.

Microneedling treatments take about 30 minutes to complete, though it may be longer depending on the size of the area to be treated. Before your treatment, your provider will clean and dry your skin. Though microneedling is usually not painful, you may experience some minor discomfort during your treatment. To help reduce discomfort, a topical numbing gel is applied to the treatment area before the procedure begins. Before the treatment, the skin is cleansed with disinfectant to avoid risk of infection.

Once your skin has been prepped, your provider applies the microneedling device to the treated area. It will be moved around the area to be treated until the entire section has been addressed. You will feel a strong vibration in your skin as the microneedling device moves over your skin.

In order to enhance the effects of the microneedling treatment, your provider may add a topical skincare solution or compounds obtained from your own blood to improve your results. When blood products are used, our nurse will draw a small amount of blood prior to the procedure, in the same fashion as when you get a blood test at a lab. The blood is centrifuged to separate out growth factors which can help stimulate collagen deposition, healing and skin tightening. The topical skincare solution or blood products are introduced to the skin where it has been treated with the microneedle device, filling the microchannels created by the microneedling device, allowing the solution to penetrate into the dermis where it can be even more effective.

After your microneedling treatment, your skin may be red and sensitive for a couple of days, but this will fade quickly.

Over the next few weeks, as your skin heals and your body generates new collagen and elastin in the skin, you will see smoother, firmer skin in the treated area. Full results take a few months to appear. We usually recommend 3 microneedling treatments, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, followed by maintenance treatments every 6 months for best results.

It is commonly used to treat:

  • Forehead lines
  • Lip lines or “smoker’s lines” around the mouth
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes

Combining Microneedling with Other Procedures

While microneedling is an effective treatment on its own, your provider may recommend combining it with a laser skin resurfacing treatment to enhance your results and help you achieve your aesthetic goals. It can also be combined with Skinboosters (hyaluronic acid fillers that are specifically designed for improving the complexion), and with Ultherapy, to augment the skin tightening effect. Best results are also seen with a good skincare regimen.
