What Is a Mommy Makeover?

The term “Mommy Makeover” was coined by plastic surgeons in the United States to describe a combination of surgical procedures addressing the specific concerns of women who have had children. Dr. Michael J. Weinberg was one of the first Royal College-certified plastic surgeons in Canada to offer the Mommy Makeover procedure. Now, the Mommy Makeover is among the fastest-growing trends in cosmetic surgery.

What Does a Mommy Makeover Include?

Dr. Weinberg is qualified to offer a tailor-made combination of procedures to help return you to your pre-pregnancy self. Because the Mommy Makeover is a completely custom operation, it can whatever options you and Dr. Weinberg decide will meet your expectations and can be combined safely.

Mommy Makeovers typically consist of all or some of the following procedures:

Depending on which procedures are appropriate for you, a Mommy Makeover takes about 4 hours to perform. Shorter operations correlate to fewer surgical complications, so Dr. Weinberg employs techniques designed to reduce procedure times.

Mommy Makeover Recovery

While recovery rates vary, most patients are able to return to work 2 to 4 weeks after their Mommy Makeover. Strenuous activities may resume in 4 to 6 weeks. You will return home from your procedure in a tensor bandeau and an abdominal binder that you will need to wear for several weeks. Scars typically fade over several months.

Are Mommy Makeovers Safe?

As with all surgical procedures, there are possible complications that can occur with Mommy Makeovers. Potential complications specific to your surgery will be discussed in detail at your consultation. For a discussion of the general risks of surgery, review Dr. Weinberg’s Your First Visit page.

Are You a Good Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

You should be in good overall health before undergoing any plastic surgery. Because Mommy Makeovers involve multiple procedures, that’s especially true. It’s also important to remember that body contouring procedures are not weight-loss surgeries.

Good candidates should be close to their ideal weight before choosing treatment. Two of the most common components of a Mommy Makeover, a tummy tuck and liposuction, are designed to tone targeted areas susceptible to stubborn pockets of fat, but they are not meant to help a patient shed many pounds.

Mommy Makeover FAQs

What cosmetic breast surgeries can be performed as part of a Mommy Makeover?

Dr. Weinberg often recommends a breast reduction for those whose breasts have enlarged post breastfeeding. Breast augmentation can be used for those who have lost breast tissue, or a breast lift can correct sagging that is left behind after pregnancy and nursing. In many cases, he combines a lift with breast augmentation to boost volume and get optimal results.

Does a Mommy Makeover always include liposuction?

No, but it’s important to remember that liposuction is useful as a body contouring procedure. Even with a tummy tuck, many patients would benefit from liposuction to further enhance their figures.

Can I include procedures that aren’t related to body contouring or breast enhancement?

Some patients want to enhance areas of their bodies not affected by their pregnancies, such as with facial procedures. Patients can get eyelid surgery, for instance, or even nonsurgical options such as injectable treatments. Dr. Weinberg guides each patient towards the most safe and effective combination of procedures for their goals.

How soon after giving birth can you get a Mommy Makeover?

Mommy Makeovers can be performed anywhere from 8 months to many years after pregnancy. You should be done breastfeeding at least several weeks prior to your procedure, and if you have a baby or small children, you should know that you will not be able to lift them for a few weeks after your surgery.

Will I have scars after my Mommy Makeover?

Yes. This is understandably a common concern. Cosmetic plastic surgery, by its nature, is designed to achieve the best aesthetic results possible. With that in mind, Dr. Weinberg plans his incisions carefully to camouflage them. Our medical team discusses exactly where each patient’s scars will be and methods patients can practice at home to care for incisions so that they heal quickly and beautifully.

Is there an advantage to having a Mommy Makeover instead of several separate procedures?

Yes. One surgery means only one general anesthetic and one recovery period. Additionally, certain fees associated with surgery, such as anesthesiologist fees, medications, etc. are consolidated. Therefore,  Mommy Makeover is a cost savings for our Ontario patients, compared with several separate procedures.
