What is a tummy tuck?
Also known as abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck flattens and firms the abdominal area by removing excess skin and fat and correcting the muscle laxity that is often present after massive weight loss or pregnancy.
Do I need a tummy tuck or liposuction?
While liposuction is great for removing isolated areas of fat, it doesn't address the sagging skin and lax muscles that are often present after pregnancy or weight loss. Dr. Weinberg often uses liposuction to give his Mississauga and Toronto tummy tuck patients sculpted waists and flanks.
Are there any alternatives to the traditional tummy tuck?
Dr. Weinberg offers refined abdominoplasty techniques not offered by many plastic surgeons in our area. Depending on your circumstances, he may recommend one of two possible tummy tuck variations:
Mini Tummy Tuck – This is a great option for those with a smaller degree of excess skin and fat, limited to the area beneath the navel. This approach uses a smaller incision and requires less recovery time.
No-Drains Tummy Tuck – By using a special suturing technique, Dr. Weinberg eliminates the need for surgical drains. This improves comfort, speeds recovery, and may ultimately produce better results. Scarring may be reduced with this technique, given that there is less tension on the scar because of the underlying layers of sutures.
Dr. Weinberg makes the incisions as small and discreet as possible, and places them so that they are usually hidden beneath a bathing suit or underwear. Most patients find that the firmer, flatter abdomen they enjoy after a tummy tuck is well worth the degree of scarring that comes with the procedure.
Will a tummy tuck get rid of my stretch marks?
The removal of excess, stretched skin will definitely reduce the appearance of stretch marks, but may not provide a total "cure." I.e., the stretch marks above the belly button usually cannot be removed. During your personal consultation, Dr. Weinberg will discuss the degree of improvement you can expect.
I'm still losing weight. Can I schedule my tummy tuck?
For optimal results, you should be at a stable, healthy weight before undergoing tummy tuck surgery. Weight loss after surgery may result in skin laxity, and weight gain after surgery can put strain on abdominal muscles, incisions and internal sutures.
