Body lift surgery is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess skin and reshapes the body after significant weight loss, improving contour, firmness, and overall proportion.
If you’ve achieved meaningful weight loss but are left with loose, sagging skin, a body lift can help refine your results—enhancing both your comfort and confidence in your new shape. In my practice, I often work with patients who are proud of their progress and are ready for that next step.
What Does a Body Lift Include?
A body lift typically involves a combination of surgeries designed to address excess skin in different areas of the body.
I approach this as a customized plan. Depending on your needs, your body lift may include a tummy tuck, arm lift, or thigh lift to create balanced, natural-looking results.
How Does a Tummy Tuck Fit Into a Body Lift?
A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) flattens and firms the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat and tightening weakened muscles.
After weight loss or pregnancy, the abdomen is often among the most affected areas. Skin may not retract fully, and the underlying muscles can remain stretched. In these cases, a tummy tuck becomes a central part of a body lift approach.
I perform tummy tuck surgery to remove excess tissue and restore a smoother, tighter contour through the midsection (see my related blog post for more things to know about a tummy tuck). Many patients also choose to combine this procedure with liposuction to further refine the waistline.
What Are Arm and Thigh Lift Procedures?
Arm and thigh lift procedures remove excess skin from the upper arms and inner thighs, improving shape, comfort, and overall proportion.
After significant weight loss, it’s common for the skin in these areas to lose elasticity and hang loosely on the body. This can affect not only appearance, but also how clothing fits and how you feel in your day-to-day activities.
These procedures may address:
- Upper arms, where loose skin can create a “swinging” or heavy appearance
- Inner thighs, where excess skin may cause discomfort or chafing
Arm and thigh lifts can be performed on their own or combined with other procedures. In many cases, they play an important role in completing the overall transformation after weight loss.
What Is Recovery Like After Body Lift Procedures?
Recovery after a body lift depends on the procedures performed, but most patients can return to work within 1 to 3 weeks for an arm or thigh lift and 2 to 4 weeks for a tummy tuck. You can expect some swelling and downtime initially, followed by a gradual return to normal activity, including exercise, over the following weeks.
Because these procedures are often combined, recovery planning is an important part of the process, and we’ll discuss it in detail during your consultation.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
A good candidate for a body lift is someone with excess, loose skin after weight loss who is in good health and at a stable weight.
You may be a good candidate if you:
- Have significant skin laxity that does not improve with diet or exercise
- Are close to your goal weight and able to maintain it
- Have realistic expectations about surgical outcomes
When these factors are in place, a body lift can help bring your results into better alignment with how you want to look and feel.
