When you think of the benefits of breast augmentation, what comes to mind? For many, it’s improved, attractive proportions, an increased enjoyment of fashion and shopping, and a generally heightened sense of confidence. But some of the breast augmentation patients I see at my Toronto-area practice say their motivation runs a bit deeper.

It’s an unfortunate truth that many women pursue breast augmentation because they say they never felt truly feminine. As their peers and female family members grew older and developed breasts, their own bodies remained relatively unchanged, leading to deep feelings of self-consciousness.

One great example of this type of patient is featured in a video I posted on Twitter recently. The video, produced by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, profiles a woman named Debbie who said she always felt like “a 12-year-old boy.” As an adult, she endured good-natured teasing from her sisters until she underwent breast augmentation with a surgeon she trusted. With her doctor’s help, Debbie chose implants that complemented her petite frame, creating results that look totally natural while still significantly enhancing her feelings of femininity.

Although feeling more feminine is an intangible benefit of breast augmentation, it’s certainly a significant one that I’ve seen among so many of my own patients. Whether you’ve always had small breasts or you’re struggling with changes after pregnancy or aging, breast augmentation can be the perfect solution. Speak with a board-certified plastic surgeon to see whether this option is right for you.
