Breast Augmentation (Augmentation Mammaplasty)

Implant Type

A cardinal feature of successful breast augmentation is choosing the right implant type and size for a patient’s individual body shape and preference. Dr. Weinberg uses both saline and the newer gel cohesive implants, and is particularly adept at assessing and guiding his patients in their choice of implant. Saline implants are made of an outer silicone shell that is inserted into the chest and then filled with fluid afterward, whereas Gel cohesive implants are constructed with a gelatinous silicone core. Both have been used safely for a number of years, though the gel cohesives are newer to the market. There are advantages and disadvantages to both types of implants, and the choice between the two will depend on  several factors. Some of these are cost (saline implants are less expensive), potential complications (saline implants require smaller incisions but can leak, gel cohesive implants have a higher incidence of capsular scarring) and the patient’s body type (in general, thinner patients may do better with gel cohesive implants).

The Surgery

The ability of a plastic surgeon to customize surgery to the individual, with flexibility in terms of  approach, are important determinants of outcomes in breast augmentation. Dr. Weinberg participates in many conferences yearly, incorporating new and innovative techniques into his surgical repertoire to bring his patients the best variety of surgical options. He employs inframmammary, transaxillary and perialveolar incision types, and implants may be placed above or below the chest muscles, tailoring his approach to the patient, to give the most desireable result, including the least noticeable scar. Breast Augmentation usually takes about 1.5 hours, and is almost always done under general anesthesia. Most patients choose to have their surgery at the clinic, and enjoy the personal attention of our warm, friendly staff, and the spa like atmosphere of a private facility. Because Dr. Weinberg is Chief of Plastic Surgery at Trillium Health Centre, patients have the option of having their surgery in hospital if they wish.

Risks specific to Breast Augmentation include deflation of the implant and capsular contracture. Mammography is still possible after Breast Augmentation and simply requires special radiologic technique.

After The Surgery

After the surgery,patients are given a tensor bandeau to wear for 6 weeks to keep the implants from riding too high on the chest.The implants will initially ride high but will usually drop down into position at about 6 weeks, and one may drop before the other. Patients can shower the next day. One can usually return to work in a few days. The breasts are usually sensitive to stimulation for a few weeks.  Physical contact with your breasts may begin in 3 to 4 weeks.  The scars fade over several months to a year.
