Your Breast Augmentation Procedure

Breast augmentation is usually performed as outpatient surgery with the patient under general anesthesia. Most procedures take about an hour and a half to complete.

Patients usually choose to have their procedures at the clinic and enjoy the personal attention of our warm, friendly staff, and the spa-like atmosphere of a private facility. Because Dr. Weinberg was Division Head of Plastic Surgery at Trillium Health Centre for more than 15 years, women also have the option of having their breast augmentations performed in the hospital.

Dr. Weinberg takes each patient’s specific goals into account when planning every breast augmentation procedure. He also offers his expertise and professional aesthetic opinion during the initial decision-making process. Dr. Weinberg closely evaluates your body’s proportions and the quality of your existing breast tissue to guide you through the following choices:

  • Breast implant choices, such as size, shape, material, profile, and texture
  • Incision location
  • Implant placement

How Much Does Breast Augmentation Cost in Mississauga and Toronto?

In the Greater Toronto Area, the cost of breast augmentation depends primarily on the choice of breast implant, including whether saline or silicone gel implants are used. Some cost savings can be realized when breast augmentation is combined with other procedures, for example when it is combined with a tummy tuck and liposuction as part of a Mommy Makeover. Read this blog post for more information.

Breast Augmentation vs. Breast Lift

Breast augmentation does not correct moderate to severe breast sagging. Dr. Weinberg may recommend combining your breast augmentation with a breast lift to tighten lax skin and enhance breast shape.

Breast Implant Choices

For today’s breast augmentation patient, Health Canada has approved both saline- and silicone-filled breast implants in a variety of shapes, sizes, and profiles, with either smooth or textured shells. Your body and your preferences will determine what makes certain implants a better choice for you. Dr. Weinberg takes these considerations into account and will help you pick the right implant type for your frame, your lifestyle, and your goals. Visit our Breast Implant Options page for more information about these choices.

Which Incision Is Best for Breast Augmentation?

While the inframammary fold (breast crease) incision is Dr. Weinberg’s preferred option, the one that works best for you depends on the size and type of the implants you select, your lifestyle, and other factors such as whether you might breastfeed in the future. Dr. Weinberg offers the following different incision options, which all become practically invisible once healed:

incision methods diagram
  • Inframammary fold (IMF) incisions are popular thanks to their versatility. Made along the crease beneath the breast, the IMF incision offers Dr. Weinberg the most amount of control during surgery, as well as a discreet scar that can easily be concealed beneath clothing and swimwear. This incision also avoids the nipple, preserving sensation and the milk-producing structures that are important for breastfeeding. These factors make the IMF incision Dr. Weinberg’s preferred incision in many breast augmentation cases.
  • Periareolar incisions are made along the lower edge of the areola. This incision creates a scar that is extremely difficult to see once healed, because it blends into the coloration border that differentiates the areola from the rest of the breast. It also allows Dr. Weinberg excellent access to the breast pocket so he can create natural-looking results.
  • Transaxillary incisions are made in the armpits. This approach’s obvious appeal is in the fact that it doesn’t create any potential for scarring on the breast. Instead, the small scar is limited to the underarm and is not typically noticeable in daily life.

While the IMF incision is Dr. Weinberg’s preferred incision option, when the IMF incision is not the best choice for the patient, he may use either the transaxillary or periareolar incision. Dr. Weinberg offers his medical opinion to help you choose the safest and most discreet incision location for you.

Is It Better to Go Over or Under the Muscle for Breast Implants?

Implant placement, or where within the breast the implant is added, is another important consideration. Most of today’s patients have 2 options, each of which can affect recuperation time and long-term results. Check out the advantages of each:

  • Over-the-muscle placement is technically called subglandular placement because the implants go above the pectoralis muscle but under the mammary gland. This is a straightforward approach to breast augmentation and typically requires the shortest, most comfortable recovery period. This option is best for women who have a good amount of existing breast tissue to cover the implant for seamless contours.
  • Submuscular (subpectoral) placement positions the implant almost completely under the pectoral muscle. This option is often useful for women with little natural breast tissue, because it uses the muscle to cover and “camouflage” the implant. Submuscular placement also creates a more natural-looking breast shape and a lower risk of a complication called bottoming out, which occurs when the implant migrates downward from its original placement. This option is a very popular choice for patients who prioritize a low complication rate and a natural look and feel.

Breast Augmentation With Fat Transfer

Women who want an alternative to breast implants and a modest increase in size may have the option of “natural” breast augmentation with fat transfer (also called fat grafting). Dr. Weinberg uses a technique similar to Brazilian butt lift surgery that harvests the fat with liposuction from areas it’s not wanted such as the belly or thighs and injects it into the breasts. Learn more in this blog post.

How Long Is the Recovery From Breast Augmentation?

You will likely return home on the day of your surgery and be able to shower a day later. Most patients are ready to return to normal daily activities within a few days and non-strenuous work within 5 to 7 days. Strenuous exercise should be delayed until your breasts are fully healed.

Dr. Weinberg is quick to remind patients that there is still work to do after surgery. Things to keep in mind include:

  • It’s important to stand and walk around several times a day after surgery to facilitate healing and reduce the risk of blood clots.
  • You will need to wear a tensor bandeau for 6 weeks to keep your implants properly placed on your chest. While your implants will initially ride high, they will usually drop down into position at about 6 weeks.
  • Physical contact with your breasts may resume in 3 to 4 weeks as the breasts are usually sensitive to stimulation for the first few weeks following your procedure.
  • At your follow-up appointments, you will be instructed on the best ways to help your incisions heal and fade quickly. Any scarring should fade within the subsequent months following your breast augmentation.

You will receive plenty of compassionate care after breast augmentation through regular follow-up appointments with Dr. Weinberg. He also makes himself available throughout the healing process, answering questions and providing guidance.

Combining Procedures

Many women choose to enhance more than their breasts with a single surgery and recovery period by combining breast augmentation with other procedures. Popular options include:

Breast Augmentation FAQ

What are the benefits of saline breast implants?

Saline breast implants can be inserted through a smaller incision than silicone implants because they are filled after placement, resulting in a smaller scar. If a saline implant were to leak, the saltwater solution would be absorbed by the body with no harmful side effects.

What are the benefits of silicone gel implants?

The new-generation silicone gel implants often provide a more natural look and feel than saline implants. In the past, there was concern about silicone leaking into the body. However, with the development of cohesive silicone gel implants, this is no longer as much of a concern. The thick consistency of the gel causes it to cling to itself (like a gummy bear) limiting the possibility of migration.

How do I decide what size implants to get?

A good place to start is our gallery of before-and-after photos. Looking through them before you come in for a consultation and deciding which one is most similar to the way you would like to look will help communicate your goals to Dr. Weinberg. Some women also experiment with putting rice in a zipper-top plastic bag and slipping it into their bras, then recording what quantity of rice gives them the look they desire. The rice measurement can then be translated into implant size.

Do breast augmentation scars go away?

Although scars may be quite visible at first, they will usually fade and be less noticeable over time. How visible your scars will be mostly depends on how you scar. The incision method that is used is an important decision you will make with Dr. Weinberg during your consultation after discussing your individual cosmetic goals. Incisions can sometimes be placed along the crease under the breast or in the armpit so they are not highly visible. Other times, incisions are positioned around the nipple so the scar blends into the color line at the edge of the areola.

How long do breast implants last before needing to be replaced?

Before you choose to have breast augmentation surgery it is important to know that breast implants do not last a lifetime. The lifespan of any implant will vary by patient and the type of implant used.

Silicone implants are generally thought to last longer than saline implants. On average, silicone implants have a lifespan of 10 to 20 years, while saline implants may require replacement in 10 to 15 years.

Will implants make my breasts sag over time?

Gravity and the natural aging process contribute to breast sagging over time as breast skin and ligaments stretch or weaken. The added weight from implants can accelerate this process. Sagging can be limited by choosing reasonably sized implants, wearing a supportive bra, avoiding weight fluctuations, and not becoming pregnant.

Can breast implants be replaced?

For women who are unhappy with their current breast implants, either because of complications or the desire for a different size, shape, or fill material, Dr. Weinberg performs breast implant revision surgery.

What happens if I become pregnant after breast augmentation surgery?

Dr. Weinberg often suggests that women wait until they have completed their families before having breast augmentation surgery. Implants cause no increased medical risk during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, many women find that their breasts change in shape and volume as a result of pregnancy, so a breast lift and/or an adjustment to the size of the implants may be necessary.

What are the risks of breast augmentation surgery?

As with all surgical procedures, there are possible complications that can occur with breast augmentation. Potential complications specific to your surgery will be discussed in detail at your consultation.
