IPL Photofacial Procedure

Before treatment you may be advised to take an antiviral medication if you are prone to cold sores as a precaution to prevent an outbreak. Your skin will be cleansed and you will be provided a pair of goggles to protect your eyes. Sometimes a special topical agent called Levulan is applied to the skin prior to treatment. The treatment lasts 20 to 30 minutes depending on the area treated (for example face versus décolletage). During this time, pulses of light energy are delivered to the treated area. A minor stinging sensation may be experienced during treatment. Best results are seen with a series of treatments, from 3 to 6, although patient experiences vary. IPL can also be combined with other treatments, including medical facials, microdermabrasion and chemical peels in a personalized beauty program to best address your needs.

IPL for Acne & Rosacea

IPL is also useful as a treatment for acne, especially when performed with the use of Levulan, a topical cream that increases sensitivity to light. There is some literature to suggest IPL may also have benefit for rosacea sufferers. Rosacea is a skin condition characterized by acne-like breakouts, broken blood vessels, redness, and flushing. In some cases, IPL may improve redness and broken blood vessels, as well as reduce the frequency of breakouts.

IPL Photofacial Cost

The size and number of areas to be treated will be decided on during your consultation. For example face and chest are common areas. Cost depends on number of treated areas and number of treatments. You’ll appreciate our competitive package prices for multiple areas and treatments, which are always available to reduce cost and make treatment more affordable.

After Your Procedure

Patients don’t all respond the same to IPL treatments. Some redness may occur after treatment. Brown spots may crust and flake off in the first day or two. Aftercare includes wearing sun screen and avoiding sun exposure. There is usually no downtime and patients can resume normal activities immediately.

IPL is best for people with light skin color, and should not be used on sun tanned skin, or in dark-skinned individuals. While patient experiences vary, a series of 4 to 6 treatments, carried out every 2 to 4 weeks, is typically recommended, followed by yearly maintenance treatments. Dramatic improvements can be seen in markedly sun damaged skin, but this result varies between patients. A photo facial in Toronto and Mississauga has the added benefit of stimulating collagen production to further counteract skin aging.

We will discuss and answer questions about specific possible side effects and complications in detail during your consultation.
