Lip Filler Recovery Day-by-Day

Day 1: Immediate Post-Treatment Swelling

Expect your lips to appear fuller than expected at first, partly due to the filler and partly due to post-injection swelling. You may also notice minor bruising, tenderness, or firmness around the injection sites. These side effects are temporary and completely normal.

Applying a cold compress and keeping your head elevated can help minimize swelling in the first 24 hours.

Day 2: Peak Swelling

Many patients report the most noticeable swelling on the second day after a lip filler treatment. Your lips may feel a bit stiff, and the shape might look uneven—don’t panic. This stage is common and does not reflect your final results.

Day 3: Gradual Improvement

Swelling starts to subside around this time. Any initial puffiness or asymmetry begins to improve as your lips adjust to the filler. Continue to avoid hot beverages, alcohol, and strenuous exercise to support the healing process.

Day 4: Settling and Softening

You’ll notice your lips looking more natural and feeling softer as swelling has typically resolved. Minor residual swelling may linger for up to a week, especially with larger volumes of filler, but by this point, most patients are enjoying their final results.

How Long Does Lip Filler Swelling Last?

In most cases, visible swelling lasts about 4 days. Small lumps or subtle swelling may persist for a few more days, but typically resolve on their own. At Mississauga Cosmetic Surgery Clinic, we use precise injection techniques and premium hyaluronic acid fillers to minimize trauma and promote smoother healing.

Tips To Reduce Swelling After Lip Fillers

  • Apply ice packs gently for short intervals during the first 24 to 48 hours
  • Sleep with your head elevated for the first few nights
  • Avoid salty foods and alcohol, which can exacerbate swelling
  • Skip intense exercise for at least 24 to 48 hours
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water
  • Avoid excessive touching or massaging of the lips

When To Seek Medical Advice

While swelling is normal, you should contact your provider if you notice signs of infection (such as increasing redness, heat, or pus), significant asymmetry that worsens after a week, or if the swelling returns suddenly after it has subsided.

Hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers can be reversed using an enzyme called hyaluronidase, so if you experience any complications or are unhappy with your results, know that you have options.
