The Rejuvenation Revolution!

Demystifying the Newest Skin Treatments: A Clear Guide

There’s been a huge uptick in new cosmetic skincare products and treatments coming to market that are getting lots of buzz. You may be wondering, what on earth is a Salmon Sperm Facial, and should I actually get one? How do these treatments differ one from the other? All of them are touted as antiaging, increasing collagen and elastin, the building blocks of a youthful healthy complexion- so how does one choose?

The information below is intended by Dr Weinberg, plastic surgeon at MCSC, as an educational overview of the newest creams, treatments and injectables touted as “ regenerative”, some of which are in the early stages of being evaluated, and while some are not yet accepted by regulatory bodies as proven in their claims, there is promising science suggesting significant benefits.

Over the next several newsletters, we’ll dig deeper to provide more detailed information about PRP/PRF, HA Skinboosters, Exosomes, Peptides, and PDRN/VAMP, so stay tuned.

  1. What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) – also known as the Vampire Facelift?

A concentration of platelets (blood cells) spun from your own blood.

  • How it works: Injected or applied during a microneedling procedure, delivers growth factors to rebuild tissue and stimulate collagen.
  • Advantages: Can be spread over a large surface, to treat whole face, neck or decolletage, or injected over large areas of the scalp to stimulate hair growth. Delivers a quick burst of stimulating factors- Safe for injection as it is your own blood product, therefore biocompatible and non irritating.
  1. What is Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF)?

An upgraded, slower-spin version of PRP that includes white blood cells and stem cells.

  • How it works: The fibrin creates a natural matrix gel that slowly releases growth factors over up to a week.
  • Advantages: Contains higher percentage of growth factors, and its gel like consistency provides subtle volume to areas like under eye hollows. Stimulates long-term tissue regeneration. Ideal for smaller discrete problem areas, like the undereye, smokers lines above the lip, acne scars .

Note- PRP/PRF is considered a drug by Health Canada, and as such should only be administered by a well trained cosmetic physician or his/her staff under their supervision.

  1. What is PDRN / VAMP (Salmon Sperm Facial / Polynucleotides)?

PDRN is a bioactive ingredient made of components of DNA derived from salmon or trout (DNA which is highly similar to human DNA). It is often combined with other nutrients in “VAMP”.

  • How it works: It is thought to help provide foundational building blocks for cell repair – studies show enhanced healing with PDRN when applied topically after cosmetic procedures (1)-while considered a cosmetic, it is thought to boost elasticity and reduce inflammation.
  • Advantages: helps improve the appearance of thin, fragile, chronically inflamed, or sun-damaged skin.
  1. What Are Peptides

Short chains of amino acids ( the components of proteins) that serve as cellular building blocks.

  • How it works: Can be among the growth factors in VAMP or Skinboosters, but mostly Peptides are administered via at-home topical skincare creams and serums for long term use. They are thought to act as chemical messengers that “tell” your skin to perform healthy functions like producing more collagen.
  • Advantages: Potential long-term collagen maintenance and everyday structural support- some peptides are also thought to have a “ Botox-Like” effect, relaxing small muscles that create fine lines.
  1. What Are Exosomes

Exosomes are tiny capsules or envelopes (nanovesicles) packed with growth factors, peptides, and RNA (genetic) material.

  • How They works: Because these collections of rejuvenating ingredients are “packaged” in tiny, flexible lipid capsules, when applied topically there is some evidence that they may be absorbed and incorporated deeply into the skin (2). Like PRP there is evidence that they may enhance hair growth(3).
  • Advantages: Some studies show rapid post-procedure recovery (4), reduction in severe skin redness, and they may help tackle significant texture or pigmentation issues, as well as helping skin look and feel more dense, less lax, and more taught and structured.
  1. What are Hyaluronic Acid (HA) “Skinboosters” (e.g.Teosyal Rednsity 1)

Micro-droplet injections of un-crosslinked or lightly cross-linked hyaluronic acid in a cocktail of other skin nutrients.

  • How it works: Acts as an internal moisturizer, pulling water into the dermis to plump the skin from the inside out.
  • Advantages: Relieving chronic dryness, dullness, and rough texture while giving a dewy, “glass-skin” glow. Studies now show that using a cannula provides a fast, comfortable way to administer Skinboosters, with excellent results. Provides faster improvement in skin appearance than many other treatments, and over weeks to months with repeat treatment patients note smoother better hydrated skin with fewer fine lines.

How to Choose: A Decision Framework

To determine the ideal option, consider your primary skin goals, your budget, and your timeline.

Choose HA Skin Boosters if:

You want a radiant glow right away before a big event, and relief of chronic dryness, and are willing to have repeat treatment to gain overall improved skin density over time.

Choose PDRN if:

Your skin is thin, fragile and crepey or you suffer from enlarged pores, skin irritation, redness or mild pigmentary change and if you’re fighting early laxity.

Choose PRP / PRF if:

You prefer a 100% natural, autologous (using your own blood products) approach. If your main concern is the under eye area, acne scarring or pigment like Melasma. Also useful if you want to improve hair growth, volume and thickness.

Choose Exosomes if:

You are looking for anti-aging and hoping to improve density/texture and improve laxity and evenness of tone, and reduction in significant irregular pigment, or if you are hoping for speedy recovery after procedures. Also may be useful If you want to improve hair growth, volume and thickness.

Choose Peptides if:

You are looking for the latest cutting edge home based long-term skin maintenance. They provide steady, everyday support for collagen production and fight photo-damage, inflam-aging, and the development of lines and wrinkles.

Can You Combine Them?

Yes, and this is frequently recommended. Many patients opt for a synergistic approach—for example pairing PRP/PRF, with an HA skin booster a few weeks later for antiaging and intense hydration. And of course, Peptide containing creams pair well with any of these in-clinic procedures.

Because each of these follows a different biological pathway ideal for specific concerns, the best way to decide what’s best for you is to come speak with our staff at MCSC.

Hello G Thanks for your interest in injections at our clinic.
Unfortunately we will not be able to contact you to update you about specials based on a reply to the newsletter alone. We do not have a mechanism to store your information via this field. If you sign up to receive our newsletters, you will receive them monthly, along with our specials! Hope that helps!

  • Nellie says:

About your promotion above….how can the three IPL treatments be used by Feb 28 if they must be spaced apart at least 2 weeks to a month? Do you mean the first of 3 must be used by Feb 28?

    • Sandy, patient coordinator says:

Hello Nellie Thanks for your question regarding IPL. Treatments every two weeks would allow 3 treatments over this time period. Having said that, we are usually somewhat flexible about scheduling for our specials, so if there was a good reason to stretch out the treatment dates, we try to accommodate. Due to Holiday closures, and a lot of belated interest in the IPL special, we are extending this promotion throughout January. If you are interested in IPL, by all means book a consultation appointment by calling us at 905-273-3045, or you can contact me at [email protected]. Please be aware we can’t schedule appointments through this newsletter reply field. Wishing you a very Happy New Year!
