It had to happen eventually; we've finally had a little snow. It's great for skiing, but not so great for our complexions. Now that winter has truly arrived, don't forget to moisturize and protect your skin from the harsh and drying climate. Make sure your home humidifier is working, drink lots of water, and don't forget a good moisturizer. Some great options include C-VIT, a vitamin C-rich moisturizer by SeSDerma®; the Cellular Repair System by SwissTEC™; and several products in the Dermaceutic line. Book an appointment with our aesthetician, Suzanne, if you need some help picking the right product for your skin.

Clinic News

In clinic news this month we've been fortunate to have a training session with Val, our rep for the fabulous ZO® line. An overnight sensation, the ZO line has taken Canada by storm since it was introduced here a few months ago, and many local celebrities have been extolling its wonderful anti-aging benefits in the media. Beware, ZO is not for the faint of heart. The Radical Night Repair is one of the most powerful vitamin A analogues available without a prescription, and it can cause lots of exfoliation, so we recommend our patients start very slowly, beginning with a once-a-week application and gradually increasing.

Dr. Schiffer and Dr. Weinberg have also had the privilege of attending the 10th annual FACE meeting in Banff, Alberta, a prestigious aesthetic medical symposium put on by Allergan Inc. An invitation-only event, this meeting brings together the leading cosmetic physicians in the country. You can read some of the highlights from this wonderful and informative session below, and view photos and more information from the meeting on our Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/mississaugacosmeticsurgery.

Topics in Cosmetic Medicine

As mentioned, Dr. Schiffer ad Dr. Weinberg attended the FACE meeting in Banff this year, and returned with the latest updates in the field. Here are some highlights:

Wrinkle Injections

2011 saw a 14% growth in the Botox Cosmetic market in Canada, and a 16% growth in JUVÉDERM®. There is an emerging trend for increased use of these products among men, and among younger women. In the case of male patients, wives and partners are now encouraging the men in their lives to take steps to maintain a younger appearance, and men often cite the competitive job market as an impetus for considering cosmetic procedures. Generation X and Y women in their 20s and 30s have fewer hesitations in deciding to treat themselves to cosmetic treatments than previous generations, and want to act proactively to prevent signs of aging early on.

Hyaluronic acid wrinkle fillers accounted for the vast majority of dermal filler treatments, with only a small percentage of patients opting for semi-permanent fillers such as SCULPTRA® or RADIESSE® Volumizing Filler. Although many consumers have awareness of these products, consumer surveys demonstrated that there is a lot of confusion about which agents are suitable for what purpose among those considering treatment, so increased education on the part of industry and physicians was identified as an ongoing need.

In a well-designed study of VOLUMA® for cheek enhancement in 100 patients, the majority had long-lasting results, 77.7% maintaining significant improvement at 18 months, with 60% of patients having the same degree of correction at 18 months that they exhibited at 8 weeks. Over 70% had persistent results at 24 months!

An increasingly popular use of dermal fillers is in the field of nasal correction. Products such as JUVÉDERM, Restylane® and other hyaluronic fillers can be used to correct a variety of problems including "saddle"-shaped noses, lumps and bumps on the top of the nose or on the tip, overly pointy nose tips, asymmetric noses, nose scars, "ski jump" noses, or droopy or "hooked" noses. The ideal candidate for nasal treatment with filler injections is one who has a minor abnormality, has not had previous nose surgery and has thick skin. While injectable treatment is not a substitute for surgery, as major defects cannot be treated, it is a good option for less severe problems, as it is quick, with no downtime, and less expense. There are potential side effects of filler treatment in the nose, including the risk of vascular complications, so nasal filler injections should only be done by highly trained and experienced injectors. Results last for many months, and sometimes much longer, at which point re-treatment to maintain the result can be carried out.

A Great Addition to Eye Rejuvenation

Studies looking at changes in eyelash appearance as women age have demonstrated that our lashes become less thick, shorter and paler as we get older. Eyelash enhancement with products such as Latisse is an excellent addition to other facial rejuvenating treatments. The longer, thicker and darker lash appearance achieved with Latisse is also considered by many to be more natural looking than the appearance of lash extensions or heavy mascara.

If you would like more information on "preventative" wrinkle injections, VOLUMA, nasal injections or Latisse, call 905-273-3045 (Mississauga) or 416-207-9090 (Toronto) and book a consultation.
