What is PRP?
PRP treatment is the injection of your own plasma into the skin to achieve improvement in complexion, reduction in scarring, and revitalized hair growth.
What Can you Expect During a Treatment?
A nurse will draw blood, much the same way as if you were giving any routine blood sample. In a few moments the blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate the red blood cells from the “ plasma”, the component of blood that contains structures called platelets. Some calcium is added, and the plasma is re-injected with a small needle into the area of treatment , most often over the face or scalp. Treatment takes less than 30 minutes, and you can return to normal activities immediately. Results can be seen over the next few months, and best results are seen with repeat treatment.
How Does PRP Work?
Platelets are vital parts of the blood that help you heal when your skin sustains any kind of injury. That’s because platelets contain important growth factors. These can be activated by the addition of calcium to the plasma. The growth factors stimulate the production of complexion improving substances like collagen , elastin and hyaluronic acid. They can also stimulate hair growth in individuals who’s hair is thinning.
What Can you Expect After Treatment with PRP?
Over the two or three months after a PRP treatment, you will see some improvement in the texture and quality of your skin. Skin will appear smoother, with fewer fine lines. Areas where PRP is especially helpful include around the mouth for “ smoker’s lines” or in the skin adjacent to the eye area, so called “ crows feet” lines. If injected into areas of scarring, these will hopefully fade over some weeks to months, and be less visible. Best results for these indications are seen after three PRP treatments. For Hair growth, 6 treatments are recommended.
What are the Advantages of PRP?
Because it uses your own blood, PRP is very safe and well tolerated. Results are gradual and very natural looking. Treatment is quick and easy. Finally, PRP can easily be combined with other treatments, such as skincare, lasers, and other injectables , as well as surgical treatments like facelifts, breast or tummy surgeries, to improve healing, and augment the aesthetic benefits.
