How CoolSculpting Works

Coolsculpting logo

CoolSculpting revolutionized fat reduction treatments, providing women and men an alternative to liposuction that doesn’t require needles or downtime. A pair of Harvard University-affiliated scientists developed the process after observing that children’s cheeks appeared hollowed out after they sucked on popsicles. They determined fat cells are more vulnerable to low temperatures than other tissues. Their research led to CoolSculpting’s exclusive process, called cryolipolysis, which cools fat cells to a temperature at which they die. Skin and other surrounding tissues remained unharmed.3

The destroyed fat cells gradually die and are then expelled from the body through the natural metabolic process.

CoolSculpting Procedure

First, you will have a consultation with Dr. Weinberg and go over your cosmetic goals. Once he determines you are a good candidate, the CoolSculpting treatment will be booked. On the day of treatment, the CoolSculpting device will be fitted on the treatment area of your choice. We can treat the following areas:

  • Midsection
  • Flanks
  • Hips
  • Back
  • Thighs
  • Under the chin

The cooling is precisely controlled and targets fat cells just below the skin. Most patients say the treatment is very comfortable. There is a sensation of coldness in the first few minutes, but the skin soon becomes numb, much like using an icepack. The length of the session depends on whether you are having one area or multiple areas treated.

Many patients see the desired results after a single treatment session,2 but a second session can be scheduled to optimize the results. Like other non-surgical fat reduction techniques, CoolSculpting is not a weight-reduction procedure. You should be at or near your ideal weight before scheduling a treatment. Dr. Weinberg is happy to evaluate your body and goals to determine whether CoolSculpting is a good fit for you or whether you would be a better candidate for a body contouring procedure such as tummy tuck surgery. If you’re considering CoolSculpting to reduce the appearance of a double chin, you may also want to ask Dr. Weinberg about BELKYRA™ injections.

How Much Does CoolSculpting Cost?

CoolSculpting is customized to treat specific areas, so the total cost varies from patient to patient. Because it doesn’t involve surgery or general anesthesia, it is less costly than liposuction or other body contouring treatments.

What to Expect After Your CoolSculpting Procedure

When the cooling process is complete, we remove the CoolSculpting device and massage the treatment area. While patient experiences vary, you may notice some redness, swelling, and bruising in the area, along with numbness. These are temporary and typically resolve quickly. Most patients return to their normal activities, including going back to work, right after the CoolSculpting session.

Because the fat cells die gradually, the initial results usually take about 3 weeks to appear. Patients typically notice continued changes in the treatment area over the next couple of months. Fat cells continue to flush from the body for up to 6 months.
