Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)Like Face Lifts, Rhinoplasty is a meticulous and delicate operation, and great improvements in appearance can be achieved with subtle anatomical changes. Reshaping of the nose can be accomplished by a number of means, including reducing or increasing size, removing a hump, changing shape of the tip or bridge, narrowing the span of nostrils, or changing the angle between the nose and upper lip. It may also include work on the septum to try to improve some breathing problems. Patients must rely on the evaluation of an experienced specialist to determine which combination of these manouevres will yield the best nasal shape for the patient’s face. Rhinoplasty usually takes 2 to 3 hours and is almost always done under general anaesthesia. For an overview of what to expect throughout the surgical process from consultation to post operative period, including general risks and side effects, see the general section on Surgical Procedures . A significant percentage of people require a second procedure to treat the residual irregularities. One is usually back to work in 1 to 2 weeks. More strenuous activities may commence in 2 to 3 weeks. One must avoid even minor trauma to the nose for 8 weeks. The final appearance may be seen at one year. The results are permanent.
