(Otoplasty) Ear Surgery

Otoplasty is designed to pin back ears that stick out away from the head. It is most often done on children between the ages of 4 and 14 years, but is also sometimes done in adults. It is an insured benefit (covered by OHIP) up to the age of 18. Dr. Weinberg is very experienced in Otoplasty surgery.

Otoplasty is usually done under a general anaesthetic in the comfort of our clinic as an outpatient. Of course it is always possible to have your surgery in hospital if you prefer, as Dr. Weinberg is Chief of Plastic surgery at Trillium Health Centre. It may be done under local anesthetic in selected adults. It takes between 1 to 2 hours. For an overview of what to expect throughout the surgical process from consultation to post operative period, including general risks and side effects, see the general section on Surgical Procedures. It is important to note that the ears can never be 100% symmetric (nor are they naturally). An excellent Otoplasty surgeon, Dr. Weinberg will attain the best approximation of symmetry possible. Recurrence of the protrusion requiring repeat surgery is not uncommon.

After the surgery the head is placed in a large bandage to protect the area for 2 to 3 weeks. A head band is then worn for 6 weeks to protect the repair during sleep. One is usually back to work or school in 5 to 7 days as long as one can tolerate wearing the bandage. Strenuous activities or contact sports can be done in 1 to 2 months. The results are usually permanent.
