Breast Reduction

Having performed over 1000 breast surgeries in the last few years, Dr. Weinberg is very experienced at breast reductions, and reports that his breast reduction patients are often among his happiest. For many women, large breasts are a source of back, neck, and shoulder pain. Breast reduction offers an excellent option for alleviating these problems, with considerable cosmetic benefits.

This surgery involves the removal of breast tissue to reduce their size. Because large breasts often sag with age or after breast feeding, breast reduction will often restore a more youthful shape and a higher location of the breast on the chest wall. Depending on the amount of tissue removed, the surgery may entail repositioning of the nipple, making the nipple smaller, and additional liposuction may be required to achieve the optimal shape. It is Dr. Weinberg’s ability to produce a pleasing and natural looking shape to the breast that makes him one of the leading breast reduction surgeons in Ontario. He was invited to demonstrate his skill in breast reduction surgery on the popular Television series Skin Deep.

Most breast reductions are covered under OHIP, and therefore are done in  hospital, at Trillium Health Centre where Dr. Weinberg is Chief of Plastic Surgery. For an overview of what to expect throughout the surgical process, from consultation to post operative period, including general risks and side effects, see the general section on Surgical Procedures. The surgery usually takes about 1.5 hours, and is almost always done under general anesthetic. Patients can typically return to work in 1 to 2 weeks, and contact with the breast can be resumed in 3 to 4 weeks. The scars fade over a few months to a year.
