Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)Blepharoplasty is a terrific procedure that can make a substantial improvement in one’s appearance, restoring a youthful contour to the eyes. It is designed to correct drooping upper eyelids and puffy bags below the eyes by removing excess fat, skin, and muscle. The upper eyelid surgery may be covered by OHIP if they droop so much that they interfere with vision. As with all facial cosmetic procedures, it requires subtle correction to render the natural look Dr. Weinberg is so well known for, and which he had perfected over the last decade of facial surgery. The surgery is done under local or general anaesthesia depending on the number of eyelids to be done and the extent of the drooping. It can take anywhere from 1 to 3 hours and is usually done at the clinic where patients can enjoy the comfort and convenience of a private facility. For those who wish to have their surgery in hospital it can be arranged at Trillium Health Centre where Dr. Weinberg is Chief of Plastic Surgery.
For an overview of what to expect throughout the surgical process from consultation to post operative period, including general risks and side effects, see the general section on Surgical Procedures. Additionally there may be some degree of temporary dryness, burning and itching of eyes, and tightness of the lids after Blepharoplasty. Excessive tearing and sensitivity to light for the first few weeks is not uncommon. There may be temporary blurred or double vision. Although there may be some difficulty in closing the eyes completely, it is rarely permanent. In some patients there may be some pulling down of the lower lids (ectropian) which may require further surgery. Blindness is extremely rare.
