Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Abdominoplasty is designed to flatten your abdomen by removing  excess fat and skin, and tightening the muscles of the abdominal wall. This is achieved by way of an incision across the suprapubic area,  from hip to hip. Ideal candidates are  people who have had fluctuations in weight, such as women who have had pregnancies, or people who have developed laxity of the abdomen with age, due to the effects of gravity. This results in loose skin with or without a bulge of fat. When this happens neither exercise nor weight loss will help, and in fact further weight loss can accentuate the problem. The surgery usually takes about 2.5 hours and is almost always done under general anesthesia. The procedure may be done at the clinic or at Trillium Health Centre, where Dr. Weinberg is Chief of Plastic Surgery, depending on patient preference, the extent of surgery, and the patient’s general health. Most patients choose to have their surgery at the clinic, with it’s pleasant atmosphere and all the personal attention of a private facility.

After the surgery patients are given an abdominal binder, which they wear for the first 6 weeks. Patients are usually back to work in 2 to 4 weeks. One can return to strenuous activities and exercise in 4 to 6 weeks, and the scar may take 3 months to 2 years to fade.

The Mini Tuck

Some patients who have an isolated outpouching of skin and fat immediately below the belly button may benefit from a mini–tuck, a procedure in which a much smaller incision made below the belly button is sufficient to allow removal of the necessary tissue to achieve a flat abdomen. This procedure takes only 45 minutes, and patients are back to work in a few days, and can resume normal exercise in 2 to 4 weeks. The scar is concealed in the lower abdominal fold, and sometimes by pubic hair.
