Sculptra

Poly-L-Lactic Acid is a novel injectable agent used to restore lost volume in the face. See the sections on the Hyaluronic Acid fillers , Restylane and Juvederm for a description of the volume changes that happen with aging. Like Hyaluronic Acid, Sculptra can be used to correct hollows in the undereye area, the cheeks, nasolabial folds, chin and jaw. It can also be used in the temple, and can be used to correct larger areas in the face, particularly in the cheeks, where Hyaluronic Acid would not be successful.

Poly-L-Lactic Acid is a synthetic material derived from fruit acids, and is biocompatible and biodegradeable, meaning it is harmless to the body and is broken down and eliminated by the body.

How Does Sculptra Work?

Sculptra works in a unique way, completely different from other temporary fillers. It stimulates the body to produce it’s own collagen. Collagen is a normal component of skin and subcutaneous tissue. By causing our body to produce it’s own collagen, Sculptra provides an increase in skin thickness thereby reducing wrinkles, lines and folds, and giving a tighter, fuller appearance to the face. Because it takes time for collagen to be produced, results are not immediate and typically require 2 or 3 series of injections over a few months. Results, however, are long lasting, typically persisting for 2 years.

Who Is The Ideal Candidate For Sculptra?

Mature patients with multiple areas of volume loss in the face, particularly those with thin loose skin, are ideal candidates for sculptra. Patients interested in long lasting results should consider sculptra.

Who Is Not a Candidate For Sculptra?

Sculptra cannot be injected into the forehead, lips and neck, therefore patients with issues of wrinkles or loose skin or volume loss in these areas should seek alternate treatments.

Is Sculptra Safe? What are the Side Effects?

Poly-L-Lactic Acid has been used for over 30 years in disolvable sutures and various types of surgical implants. It has been used for cosmetic injection since 1999 in 30 countries. As with other injectables, bruising and swelling can occur, but are usually minimal and temporary. There is also a low risk of allergic reaction or infection. There is also the possibility of developing small bumps under the skin. These can be felt but are not typically visible. Visible bumps with redness have also been reported in less than 1% of cases. The occurrence of these bumps can be reduced by carefully following the post treatment instructions to massage the treated area fully and frequently for 5 days after the injections.
