IPL PhotofacialsIntense Pulse light, or IPL treatment, also called photofacial, utilize light in a discrete range of wavelengths to reverse signs of aging from sun damage. (This differs from a true laser which by definition emits light of one wavelength only). Over time all of us suffer some degree of skin damage due to repeated exposure to UV radiation. This results in change of skin texture, unevenness of pigment, discoloration, freckles, broken blood vessels and brown spots. IPL targets discolored brown or red areas, thereby improving skin texture and color leading to reduced pores, and a tighter, even toned complexion. IPL is best for people with light skin color, and should not be used on sun tanned skin, or in dark skinned individuals. 4 or 5 monthly treatments are recommended, followed by yearly maintenance treatments. Dramatic improvements are seen in markedly sun damaged skin. Photofacials have the added benefit of stimulating collagen production, thereby thickening the epidermis, further counteracting skin aging. Patients should wear sun screen after treatment and avoid excessive sun exposure. What are the side effects of IPL?
