January Newsletter
Hello everyone and a belated Happy New Year form Mississauga Cosmetic Surgery clinic! 2009 went out with a bang with our fabulous client appreciation day, which was tons of fun, and spectacularly well attended. Thanks to all of you out there who helped make it a huge success. Dr. Weinberg and Dr. Schiffer also attended the very informative CLASS ( Canadian Laser and Aesthetic Surgery Symposium) conference. Dr. Weinberg completed filming for an episode of Plastic Makes Perfect which is now in production and will air in the next few months.
2010 has gotten off to a very busy start, with Trillium Health Centre becoming a full teaching hospital affiliated with University of Toronto, and the department of Plastic Surgery will now be a full academic department with Dr. Weinberg as Chief of the division. This weekend Dr. Weinberg will be speaking at the Bridal Show at Exhibition place at the Medicis booth in the Direct Energy building on Friday from 5 to 7 PM, and on Sunday at 11 AM to 1 PM. Don't miss this opportunity to hear all about Liposonix, the latest fat burning technology. There will be a demonstration and plenty of time to ask questions.
How to Beat the Winter Beauty Blahs
Exfoliate
Microdermabrasion, chemical peels and medical facials are all excellent ways to get rid of the rough, dry and dull looking surface layer of skin that accumulates in the winter months due to cold conditions and lack of humidity. With microdermabrasion , that outer layer is mechanically removed with microscopic crystals that polish the skin, revealing a smoother fresher complexion beneath. It is great for a quick pick me up, and is minimally invasive with virtually no down time, and can be done over a lunch hour. Chemical peels come in varying strengths and can provide a somewhat deeper exfoliation by using glycolic, lactic and salacylic acids, which can also benefit skin conditions like acne. For deep pore cleansing and extractions try a medical facial. Take advantage of our Medical Facial Promotion, on now through February, regularly $115, now only $49.99!
Smooth
Repeated sun exposure can leave skin with uneven texture and pigment that can become especially noticeable with winter skin pallor. Want that glow you get with a sun tan without the damage to your skin? Try the healthy alternative, IPL, or intense pulsed light therapy. IPL is achieved with the use of a laser like light beam that "sees" and zaps areas of discoloration. These areas then slough off or fade away over the next few days., leaving your skin more even toned and smooth. IPL can give your skin a rosy glow, and tighten pores. Winter is the perfect time for IPL, as it cannot be done on tanned skin.
Moisturize
Cold dry winter weather , wind, and lack of humidity in our homes contributes to dry flaky skin . Even normally oily complexions often need extra hydration during the winter. A good barrier cream helps the skin retain moisture, and high quality skin care creams have the added advantage of antioxidants like vitamin C at significant concentrations, that help prevent and reverse skin aging. A good moisturizer, especially for sensitive spots like the undereye area, will help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and will also be hypoallergenic so as not to add to the irritation and itching dryness can cause. And never forget the importance of UV protection. Even in the winter our skin is prone to the unhealthy effects of UVA and UVB radiation , especially if we enjoy outdoor sports like skiing . And finally, when you moisturize, don't forget your lips. Chapped raw lips spoil the appearance of even the best lipstick, causing it to bleed into all those little lines around the mouth, making us look old and tired.
Good quality skin care products need not be expensive. Don't pay large sums for pricey fancy packaging. Some of our favorite products , including Clayton Chagal's collagen based hydrating gel, Obagi's elastiderm, and La Roche Posays Ceralip, and Sesderma's C Vit lotion, are very reasonably priced and do a fantastic job of keeping you smooth and dewy no matter what the weather.
Plump
There's no time like the present to consider what injectable beauty products can do to enhance your appearance. Winter is an especially good time to consider Botox or filler injections like Juvederm and Restylane, because we often need a little beauty boost at this time of year. Dryness often accentuates lines around the eyes and in the forehead, and we tend to look tired in these hard working months. Botox can substantially reduce lines in both the forehead and in the crows feet area, and filler injections can get rid of dark hollows under the eyes, restore fullness to the cheeks and plump up our lips. With the introduction of Lidocaine in the Juvederm line of products, and with the new ultra fine needles just introduced for the restylane/perlane line, these products have never been more comfortable or easy to use. Ask about our upcoming Restylane Day in February, during which our restylane/ perlane line of products will be available at much reduced prices.

Finally, whatever other investment you make in your beauty regimen, finish your look off with an excellent quality mineral cosmetic. The right shade of foundation carefully matched to your skin tone can make all the difference to the appearance of your complexion. And cosmetics that don't clog pores, and that don't irritate the skin or aggravate inflammation are important for good skin health, especially for those with acne, Rosacia or eczema. Come in for a free skin care consultation with our aesthetician and get a mini makeover with glomineral cosmetics. In a myriad of shades , there's a perfect match for every skin tone , and with vitamin C, A, K and E, green tea extract , and UV protection, these cosmetics are the perfect complement to any beauty treatment and will keep your skin looking young and fresh.
